UPVC and composite doors

UPVC door will not lock? Fixed.

Handles that will not lift, handles that spin, a key that turns and does nothing, or a door that only locks if you lean on it. Most of the time it is the multipoint mechanism inside the door, or the door has dropped and no longer lines up with the frame. Both are usually fixed in one visit.

What is covered

UPVC door lock repair, job by job.

If yours is not on the list, ring and ask. A straight answer costs nothing.

  • Multipoint mechanisms

The long lock inside the door edge. Stripped, adjusted, or replaced from van stock if the gearbox has failed.

  • Handles

Handles that spin, droop or will not lift, replaced or reset.

  • Dropped doors

Doors that catch on the frame or only lock with a shove, realigned so the hooks meet the keeps again.

  • Euro cylinders

Snapped, seized or worn cylinders replaced, with anti-snap upgrades on offer.

  • Stuck shut

Doors jammed locked, opened with as little damage as the mechanism allows, then repaired.

  • Composite and patio doors

The same multipoint principles on composite front doors and sliding patio doors.

  • UPVC windows

Window handles and locking mechanisms that have stopped working.

A door that is getting stiffer to lock is usually telling you something. Ring before it fails completely: alignment is a quicker job than a broken gearbox.

Warning signs

Ring before it fails completely.

Caught early, most of these are a quicker, simpler job.

Signs it is on the way out

  • The handle needs extra force to lift before the key will turn.
  • The key turns but the door will not lock, or there is a click and nothing happens.
  • The handle droops, wobbles or spins freely.
  • The door catches on the frame, or only locks if you push it.
  • The key is stiff, or only works from one side.

The usual causes

  • The door has dropped or moved out of line with the frame.
  • A worn or broken gearbox inside the multipoint mechanism.
  • A worn, seized or damaged euro cylinder.
  • A tired handle spring.

How the job usually goes

From the phone call to the door shutting behind you.

  1. Tell us what it does

Does the handle lift? Does the key turn? Does the door still open? A photo of the edge of the door helps.

  2. Price on the phone

A straight answer on whether it sounds like alignment or the mechanism, and what each costs.

  3. Stripped and diagnosed

The mechanism comes out, the fault is found, and it is repaired or replaced from van stock.

  4. Tested and adjusted

Locked and unlocked with you, from both sides, until it works the way it should.

What has happened?

Pick the closest one, then ring. Knowing this before the van sets off saves everyone time.

A lock that has broken, snapped or seized

UPVC doors that will not lift and lock, handles that spin, keys that turn and do nothing. The mechanism is stripped and adjusted where it can be saved, or replaced from van stock where it cannot, and tested with you before payment.

Have this ready

Whether the door still opens, what happens when you turn the key, and a photo of the lock edge if you can take one.

Typical jobs

What usually happens on site.

Every job is quoted on the phone first. This is the usual approach and how long it tends to take once the van arrives.

Straight answers

UPVC door lock repair: what people ask.

Anything else, ring and ask. It costs nothing to find out.

Why will my UPVC door not lock?

Usually one of two things. Either the door has dropped or moved so the hooks and rollers no longer meet the keeps in the frame, or the gearbox inside the multipoint mechanism has worn or broken. If the handle is stiff to lift before it fails, it is often alignment. If it lifts freely and nothing engages, it is usually the gearbox.

Does the whole lock need replacing?

Not always. Some faults are adjustment, some need just the gearbox, and some need the full mechanism. You are told which before any work starts.

My door is stuck locked shut. Can you open it?

Yes. Doors jammed by a failed mechanism are opened with as little damage as possible, then the mechanism is repaired or replaced so the door works again.

Can you do composite doors too?

Yes. Composite front doors use the same kind of multipoint mechanism and cylinder as UPVC.
