Repaired, replaced, fitted
Locks repaired, replaced and fitted to suit the door.
A key that turns and does nothing, a cylinder that has seized, a night latch that sticks or a lock that has simply worn out. The mechanism is repaired where it can be saved and replaced where it cannot, usually on the first visit, because the common locks are already in the van.
What is covered
Lock repair and replacement, job by job.
If yours is not on the list, ring and ask. A straight answer costs nothing.
-
Euro cylinders
Snapped, seized or worn cylinders replaced and keyed up. Keyed alike if you want one key for every door.
-
Anti-snap upgrades
Older cylinders swapped for anti-snap ones, which are much harder to break with the brute-force method burglars favour.
-
Night latches
Rim latches that stick, slip or will not hold, repaired or replaced.
-
Mortice locks
Deadlocks and sashlocks on timber doors, including the British Standard locks many home insurance policies ask for.
-
Windows
Window locks and handles that have failed or lost their keys.
-
Gates, sheds and outbuildings
Gate locks, shed locks, hasps and padlocks.
-
Shutters and commercial
Shutter locks and padlocks for shops, units and yards.
If your home insurance names a particular standard of lock, such as BS3621 for mortice locks on exit doors, say so on the phone so the right one comes with the van.
Warning signs
Ring before it fails completely.
Caught early, most of these are a quicker, simpler job.
Signs it is on the way out
- The key turns but nothing happens.
- The key sticks, grinds or needs jiggling to work.
- A night latch will not catch, or slips back when the door is pushed.
- The lock gets stiffer in cold or damp weather.
- A key has snapped or bent in the lock.
The usual causes
- Wear inside the cylinder after years of daily use.
- A seized mechanism, often from damp or a lack of lubrication.
- A door that has moved, so the bolt fights the keep.
- Damage from a forced entry or a previous attempt.
The promise
Straight pricing, agreed before the van moves.
- Price agreed on the phone before the van moves
- That is the price you pay: no hourly creep, no surprise parts bill
- The locksmith you speak to is the one who turns up
- Opened without damage wherever the lock allows
- Common locks, keys and remotes carried in the van
- Tested with you before you pay
- DBS checked, so you know who is coming to your door
- SERMI registered: approved to access vehicle makers' security data to programme car and van keys
How the job usually goes
From the phone call to the door shutting behind you.
-
Describe the lock
What it does when you turn the key, and a photo of the lock edge if you can take one. That settles which part comes with the van.
-
Price on the phone
Repair or replace, you hear the price and the reasoning before anything is booked.
-
Fixed on the first visit
Repaired where it can be saved, replaced from van stock where it cannot.
-
Tested with you
Every key tried in every lock, with you there, before payment.
Get help now
What has happened?
Pick the closest one, then ring. Knowing this before the van sets off saves everyone time.
Locked out of the house or the car
The most common call there is. The lock is opened without damage wherever it allows it, and you are back in with the same key working as before. If the key is snapped in the barrel, say so on the phone and the right cylinder comes out with the van.
Have this ready
The address, whether it is a front or back door, and roughly what the lock looks like. For a vehicle, the make, model and registration.
A lock that has broken, snapped or seized
UPVC doors that will not lift and lock, handles that spin, keys that turn and do nothing. The mechanism is stripped and adjusted where it can be saved, or replaced from van stock where it cannot, and tested with you before payment.
Have this ready
Whether the door still opens, what happens when you turn the key, and a photo of the lock edge if you can take one.
Keys lost or stolen
If keys have gone missing with an address attached, the locks want changing rather than opening. Cylinders are swapped the same visit, keyed alike where you want one key for both doors, and the old keys are made useless.
Have this ready
How many doors need doing, whether you want one key to fit them all, and if anything was taken with the keys.
Vehicle key or spare remote
Keys cut, supplied and programmed for cars and commercial vehicles, including the case where the only key is gone. Spare remotes paired while you wait, at the roadside or on your drive, with no recovery truck and no dealer booking.
Have this ready
Make, model, year and registration, plus whether you still have a working key. V5 or proof of ownership will be asked for.
Typical jobs
What usually happens on site.
Every job is quoted on the phone first. This is the usual approach and how long it tends to take once the van arrives.
| Job | Usual approach | Time on site |
|---|---|---|
| Locked out, key on the inside | Opened non-destructively, lock left working as it was | Usually minutes |
| Snapped or seized cylinder | Old cylinder removed, new one fitted and keyed up | Under an hour |
| UPVC door that will not lock | Mechanism stripped, adjusted or replaced from van stock | Under an hour |
| Keys lost with the address | Cylinders changed the same visit, old keys made useless | Same visit |
| Locked out of a car or van | Opened without damage, proof of ownership checked | Usually minutes |
Times are what these jobs usually take once the van is on site, not a promise. The price is agreed on the phone before anyone sets off.
Straight answers
Lock repair and replacement: what people ask.
Anything else, ring and ask. It costs nothing to find out.
Can it be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Repaired where it can be saved, replaced where it cannot. You are told which and why, and the price, before any work starts.
Do you carry the lock I need?
The common sizes of cylinder, night latch and mortice lock are carried in the van. If yours is unusual, a photo of the lock edge on the phone settles it before anyone sets off.
Can all my doors use the same key?
Yes. Cylinders can be keyed alike so one key opens the front and back doors.
Are anti-snap cylinders worth it?
If your door has an older euro cylinder, yes. Lock snapping is a common way into UPVC and composite doors, and an anti-snap cylinder is a small, quick change that closes it off.
